After a ton of rain (well, in metric that's 2") the Slad Road in Stroud turned into a lake again. The source of the flood was a river that runs parallel with the road that obviously meets an obstruction somewhere and has to spill out into the Slad Road. One chap was going for a paddle in his canoe while a couple people decided to swim over the road. I shudder to think what was in that water.

The flood started mid afternoon and wasn't too bad at this point.

This is where the river joins the road.

The CO-OP.

Locking Hill.

Lake outside the health centre.

Taken from the park, where old folks were heard to say things like 'never seen it this bad before' while most others were expressing concern for the home owners that have just been flooded again.

I think an investigation is in order to find out why the stream keeps flooding. New cinema on Merrywalks is something that springs to my mind.

Great pics a friend said people were in canoes.

I am only 24 but have never seen flooding like that before in the valleys.

The last bout of these monsoon rains flooded the Slad Road like this and it had to be pumped out. The Slad Brook runs in a culvert (artificial channel exposed in places and a tunnel under buildings). There are gratings at various places to collect debris. These gratings have to be cleared of debris. When I walked past the cinema the other day there wasn't a lot of rubbish. Probably, the culvert wasn't built to take this much water this quickly, in which case . . . But I do think more could be done to keep the culvert clear.

The video is fantastic. There's someone up to their waist in water and they still feel it necessary to carry an umbrella!!

Just thought I would comment regarding my journey home last night. I left the office at 5.00pm for a 6 minutes, 2 mile journey home to Middleyard.

It took 1 hour 42 mins and just over 12 miles to find a way across the valley, every crossing of the river Frome was blocked.

Thanks dot.com; I don't think that the stills bring it home (to me over here); but my viewing of the video was accompanied by several "bloody hells". Good stuff (the video, not the flood)

And they say there is more water from heaven on the way. Forget 4x4's. Powered zodiac's is my next purchase. I foresee Stroud valleys as the next Venice of the west. Sinnikal chief gondolier.
