Who'd like to contribute a good dramatic flooding picture for the cover of a Cotswold business-to-business magazine? Ideally it wants to be in portrait format (or so that a part of it can be used portrait) and preferably at least 2000 pixels high?

No money unfortunately, but a credit will be given.

Peter

Slad Road was a deep pond but by the next morning it was a mud bath. the chemist shop's till desk was upended and the place looked like it had been raided but I don't think thieves would of caused as much mess!

I feel really sorry for those in Gloucester as they are without water. At the news conference a minute ago someone from The Guardian asked specifically about 'the Stroud reservoirs' but the man from Severn Trent water said us down here will be fine.

Dot.com mentioned "smelly sludge" in Slad Road. Fact is that, when the waters have gone, many problems will remain, "smelly sludge" being but one of them - hopefully the associated diseases will be avoided

Good luck to all involved

Gloucestershire is headline news here in Barcelona. They're principally showing scenes of Tewkesbury on the TV news, together with images of the battle to save Walham and other very depressing scenes.

We're with you Glos! Hope you pull through this one quickly.

BTW half of Barcelona has been without power for 36 hours now because of a substation fire. People trapped in trains, lifts, the full disaster scenario.

Thanks S it is interesting to know what is going on where you are. We have been without water for two days but we have electricity. It is difficult managing with the very little water that we have but at least we are not flooded here.

My sister in law says that they are receiving our flood news over in Perth Australia too!

Wozie, what's the water situation now? I read in the online SNJ that inspectors have restored supplies. Does that mean for Nailsworth too?

Best of luck there, guys!

Here most people have had power restored, but incredibly ten thousand homes are still without electricity since the Monday morning outage, and they're basically going spare, cutting traffic, actually assaulting electricity workers trying to repair it, and all sorts of desperate behaviour.

Goodmorning S, I am over in Gloucester now although I do go over to Nailsworth fairly often. We seem to have plenty of bowsers hereabouts but most of the time they are empty because of the density of the housing they have to serve. They had plenty of bottled water in Morrisons yesterday, purchase of it wasn't limit at all and people seemed to be only buying what they needed so there was enough for everyone. We are so lucky to have our water butt as we can boil the water for washing and use it for the toilet once a day. The beauty of it it the butt keeps filling up! I noticed that some locals had taken the end off their drainpipes and catching rainwater in buckets. Maybe now it should be made compulsory for every house to have a water butt!

Another term I am not familar with is Water Butt ?

Is that a barrel to catch water ?

What we would call a cistern ?

Thanks

Dani

A water butt is a barrell (plastic or wood) that is used to collect rainwater from drainpipes. It can be used for flushng toilets or watering the garden.

I don't know where the word 'butt' originated from, perhaps SinniKal will tell us.

We all know what you call butts are in America though!

A 'butt' is the end of a cigarette. A butt is also an archery target. Oh and also the end of a rifle.

Thankyou I, isn't it also a parcel of land?

There is a Butt Street in Stroud too.

As you asked nicely Wozie

A 'butt' was a large barrel (up to 140 gallons, about 2 hogsheads) that held drinking water on ships of the line many, many years ago.

There are lots of other meanings of 'butt', the one that refers to a parcel of land comes from the Germanic 'butte'.

Not a lot of people know that
