Looks like the wind turbine is finally getting repaired after being out of action for what seems like all year!

Not the best photo, having to get back to work I had to take it from the common and it's been effected by what must be heat haze of all things!

Especially like the golfer seemingly oblivious to it all

It's not like we have missed the tiny amount of energy it produces at the cost of looking at the ugly eyesore. Get building some nuclear power stations while we have time - then it doesn't really matter if the Russians turn the gas tap off. We could do all this whilst the alternative energy lot are wringing their hands, navel gazing and sitting on fences.

By 5.00pm the blades (sails?) had been removed.

(An awful picture, but I don't have a very powerful telephoto)

They put ugly things like sewers undeground, why not wind turbines.

Scoglin, would you know if you'd missed the clean energy production ? What real cost is there from looking at it ? Don't look. How long does a nuke take to build and then produce ? It is the vista-istas such as you who are navel gazing about some sort of 'alternative' to the real problems of climate change and resource depletion. Renewable energy is now mainstream and not sitting on any fences or wringing hands, that is left for you to do.

The real cost is procrastination. The government should govern but does not. We have a weak and vulnerable government ( just wait until the May elections ) and the problem with a government that is flagging in the polls is that it is of course unwilling to make bold and sometimes unpopular decisions. We have an energy crisis in the UK. We need an alternative to gas in order to be self sufficient. The choices are to build coal fired power stations or nuclear power stations. I have no objection to alternative energy contributing to the overall picture, but that is all it will ever do, contribute a little. Whilst we are all debating what percentage the alternatives can provide ( and it is not a lot ) we need to tick the nuclear box or the coal fired box. If I was Gordon Brown at the moment I would not dare to mention either but we do need to choose and build. I cannot see the justification in coal fired power stations due to the environmental implications. I see nuclear as the only choice to provide the majority of our power. If only the Labour Party had a huge majority and were riding high in the polls they would have balls to make a decision. I am not a Tory but a lot was done in the eighties that was unpopular but needed doing. A healthy majority and a good poll rating helped Thatcher to do those things. Just out of interest I will be voting green in the local elections before you try and pigeon hole me. I spend a lot of time in France. They have a much stronger green policy than we do, a stronger organic movement but are blissfully self sufficient with nuclear power.

A few more photos. There is quite a collection of cranes on site, and the turbine appears to be undergoing a major repair.

The main generator.

The top being removed.

And because the UK has no proper wind manufacturing it all came in from Germany.

The 3rd photo now explains the strange object that is on a Lorry in the FGR car park, I was wondering when I saw it yesterday.

Thanks for the photos

"They put ugly things like sewers underground, why not wind turbines."

LOL, ROFL, ho ho ho etc. Although perhaps there's the germ of a good idea there... what about SEWAGE TURBINES, generating electricity from the continuous flow of sewage... out of sight, so no complaints. Think I'll set up a consultancy!

Ah ha, i live across the valley from the fan, and on previous summers have felt no cooling effect at all from it...... very disappointing! Does anyone know if the repaired fan will be any better, and even maybe if it might oscillate as well from now on ?

Scoglin, how self-sufficient can we be with nuclear ? When other countries take the nuclear route, how long does the world's nuclear resource last ? I now see pollution affecting the climate as secondary to resource depletion due to increased global demand for finite reserves, whether fossil or fissile fuel.

France, in addition to having small coal reserves leading to greater dependence on nuclear, has less wind energy than the UK but are inplementing wind energy along with other renewables (e.g. La Rance tidal, solar PV with gretaer solar resource than the UK).

The French recognise that renewables can make a useful contribution to reducing demand for non-sustainable, fuel-based energy.

I agree that this and previous governments act in a spineless and short-term fashion. That's politics.
