Here are the Newmarket children smartly dressed in their Beefeater outfits meeting Princess Anne in 1978 when she visited Nailsworth.

Hope you have got a scanner ATV, and a Coral programme or similar on your computer. it is quite a time consuming process and I,m hoping I have managed to downsize the above image correctly, we'll see now.

"The pub was extremely busy and used by local residents - not those who now class themselves as locals having moved into Newmarket all of 2 -3 years ago !!!!! "

So, ex-resident, when exactly does one qualify for 'resident' or 'local' status?

We pay council tax, invest in our community, shop locally, hold and contribute to the fete, commune with our fellow residents here and in Nailsworth day to day and also at The George and wholeheartedly love the Newmarket valley, Nailsworth and where we live. How long before we finally become accepted???

I am glad that everyone who lives here doesn't share your view.

And special thanks to Wozie, Betty and others for all their contributions and photographs. As a current resident I find it fascinating to read about the history of Newmarket.

I would also direct those of you who are interested in the history of Newmarket to the town archives where they have some wonderful photographs of Hilliers and the valley as it used to be, together with the redevelopment of the area.

Thanks Betty and all, this is great - anyone else got any pictures? Keep the stories coming - all contributions will be used at the fete, which is outside the George on Sunday 30th may.

If you are a musician of any kind get in touch with Andy (Honeymoon Quartet) who is organising the performers - should be a good afternoon - again. And all for charity!

Still after memories from people who worked at Hazlewoods - its not that long since it closed but want to try and preserve its memory! Modern photos would also be very welcome of Newmarket over the past 20 years - its all history!

Has anyone any photos of the old fancy dress parades we've heard about for local kids? I heard that Betty used to do a pied piper thing with the local kiddies on fete days?

Does anyone recall playing on the horse chestnut tree opposite the pub. I've had it suggested that people currently in their 80's remember climbing it as kids?

Who else has fond memories of this lovely pink flowering tree?

I've been taking photos for the memories of newmarket display/ scrapbook/ booklet ?? whatever it might become and I've come across a mystery .. a headstone (though clearly not a gravestone) that looks like its just abandoned with a strange inscription. It reads something like this .. remember that for many hundreds of years this was a beautiful valley where people could make their way to idle through green fields at the side of a running brook. It was destroyed in 1974 by the department of the environment.

Geoffrey Rippon MP

John Peyton MP

Keith Speed MP

Brigadier Baldwin

I don't know if the 4 fellas mentioned are the objectors or those held responsible, and I don't know if the whole thing belongs in this valley or refers to somewhere else.

Any ideas ???

Also interested to know when the fire at Gesthemane occurred - I understand it was a real tragedy but I'm not sure if it was in the 80's or much earlier?

Cheers
