Is Westonbirt worth the entrance fee for an autumn walk or am I better just going for a free amble through woodchester?

From when I went there years ago, I would say it was worth paying for. There are lots of different types of tree from around the world, with different coloured leaves.

The night walk was good too, when I went back in the 90s.

Check an Ordnance Survey map. There are 2 public footpaths running through Westonbirt which can be accessed without paying!Of course you'll intend walking straight through and not loitering to enjoy the trees..........

Thanks for the heads-up. I see you could have a good walk thru Silk Wood from, say, Leighterton, but not so sure if the Old Arbortoreum is accessible from the other public FP. Is it? Which part is best for an autumn walk - Silk Wood or the Old Arbortoreum?

Sometimes it's easier to just pay and have somewhere to park!

I've not been for a few years but I think the silk wood is better for Autumn colours. The downside is it will be full of people and tripods.

There are other woodlands that are equally nice for an Autumn walk so don't forget what might be on your own doorstep!

Looks like the trees are now starting to go yellow, just need some blue sky and sunshine to bring out the best of it.

Yep , you've got to get out there quickly Sparky before the wind and frost empty the trees. Have a stroll through Ruskin Mill, it was looking lovely today in the sun - with lunch and coffee on the balcony.
