It seems that Stroud Council ( Where Nailsworth shops pay their business rates to ) is supplying shops in Stroud with free Christmas Trees and brackets plus help with lights. Nailsworth has brackets fitted above many shops ready for the trees so will we be getting free trees and lights. What is Nailsworth Chamber of Trade doing to improve the rubbish display we had last year ?

The lights in Nailsworth have been rubbish for years! Even Stroud has far better Christmas lights.

Perhaps a letter to the Stroud News and Journal would get more of a reading, Cliff.

I would assume that it is Stroud TOWN Council, not SDC who are supplying the Christmas trees.

If that is the case, it is irrelevant who Nailsworth town shop keepers are paying their rates to.

Having said that, while I would love to see an impressive lighting display in the town, the financial burden is not small. A relation who owns a town centre business (in another, similar sized town) is only surviving by paying themselves minimum wage and requests to help pretty up the town are just not possible to meet. I'm sure there must be businesses like this in Nailsworth who simply can't afford to help.

When I had shops in Nailsworth, every Christmas I bought my own trees and fitted lights to those trees and then fitted the trees into the brackets, and paid for the electricity to run them. I also hung several strings of lights across all three shops and it looked fantastic and custom was boosted. The cost of approx £40 was amply covered by the Christmas takings. Even in the days when trees and lights were supplied by the Chamber of Trade and fitted into their brackets by the fire brigade several shop owners refused to plug the fairy lights in because of the cost of running them. (probably 10p a day)

I think NTC are upgrading the town's lights this year - or at least changing a couple of the old ones from candle stubs to LEDs

Hopefully they will change the Christmas Tree lights hanging on the lamp posts. From a certain angle they look like an old lady with a walking stick rather than a tree.
