The power of clocks by Anonymous Coward

Having put the clocks back, I notice that the Sun rises earlier...!

Is there a mechanism for this that is even partly understood?

All my life it never struck me, the power of the little dial at the back of my clock, and the buttons on my watch..

Maybe we could use this power to make energy, control the Sun?

I had thought that if Scotland had got independence we could do away with that nonsense!

I don't bother to change my watch-just carry on using BST and remember not to go to Morrisons before 11:00 on Sunday-simples and "my" sun behaves exactly the same as it used to before Oct 26th-nice and light in the evening

No-just can't see why we need to do this just for the sake of half a dozen Scottish farmers who don't like milking their cows in the dark-grossly inconvenient for me as it means I have to wait a whole extra hour before I "am allowed" to sit down, watch telly and most important of all enjoy my evening bottle of ale.

Surely Scottish farmers can milk their cows when they want. Why would they want the clocks to change?

I thought it was for the better safety of cyclists, and pedestrians. Lighter mornings.

While a driver is busy tweeting on his phone, a lack of light further reduces the safety of cyclist.

Info I have seen quoted from a trial period of NOT putting the clocks back (was sometime in the 60s or 70s but I cannot remember) is that not putting the clocks back in winter would actually reduce accidents. Additional benefits quoted-better for tourism economy, brings us into line with EU (though we would need to put the clocks forward another hour in spring OK UKIP men won't care for that)and power saving -please don't ask me how they worked all this out I'm just quoting. Seems the only thing holding us back is good old fashioned political inertia-little bit like our crazy drug laws then.
