A few photos of the earthworks for those that haven't been along that way for a while..

This is from the Avening side.

From the Nailsworth side.

A walkway is constructed around it.

And nearer to Avening they are doing a lot of tree thinning.

Blimey, I didn't realise what the work was going involve. No wonder the road will be closed for so long.

Great photos

Does anyone get a guilty feeling whilst looking at these photos that such a beautiful piece of woodland is despoiled by having a tarmac road cut through it? I know I do.

(I shall now await the rantings of the local Jeremy Clarkson wannabees!)

Do you realise that this whole area used to be almost devoid of woodland?

The road to Avening has been around for quite a while.

It's true. The whole of England used to be savannah until the late 1950s.

then you'll want to give up eating meat, to save the rainforests being cut down to grow food to feed farm animals, then won't you, Orson Cart...or are you vegetarian?

*expects mention of organic meat*

Great photos, but how did we get onto organic veggie food..??

The poster is correct that the majority of the woodlands around here used to be much more heavily thinned. Just look at the old photos from 100 years ago and the views of the whole town are very different.

Get real. It's mostly the woodland equivalent of a field of weeds.

And before that? Is there any history before photography? Maybe, just maybe, there were loads of trees that were cut down to build ships and houses?

I suspect a lot were cut down to build houses and for fires for keeping warm / cooking.

Dont forget that since 1993 when all petrol engined cars had to have catalytic converters fitted they put out nothing but carbon dioxide. Plants absorb it with relish, hence the lush greenery in the photos. Seems like an impressive job going on there.
