0.999....(recurring) exactly equals 1 by Anonymous Coward Date: 23/11/2014 Time: 22:17:50 | | | 1/9=0.111..... 9*(1/9)=0.999....=1 QED | >> Tagged as: Select All |
0.999....(recurring) exactly equals 1 by Inchbrook Posts by this user 34 Date: 24/11/2014 Time: 11:48:56 | [Report this Post] | | Not so! .999 recurring 1, therefore does not equal 1. | >> Tagged as: Select All |
0.999....(recurring) exactly equals 1 by Inchbrook Posts by this user 34 Date: 24/11/2014 Time: 12:23:13 | [Report this Post] | | This should have read .999 1 [is less than 1].... | >> Tagged as: Select All |
0.999....(recurring) exactly equals 1 by Anonymous Coward Date: 24/11/2014 Time: 12:37:17 | | | I don't know what you mean. 0.9 recurring, ie 0.999999999999999999999999...to an infinite number of 9s. It equals 1. What are you trying to say? | >> Tagged as: Select All |
0.999....(recurring) exactly equals 1 by Cliff Pilchard Posts by this user 40 Date: 24/11/2014 Time: 16:30:16 | [Report this Post] | | 9*(1/9)=0.999.... No it does't ! | >> Tagged as: Select All |
0.999....(recurring) exactly equals 1 by Anonymous Coward Date: 24/11/2014 Time: 17:49:35 | | | what I mean, Cliff, is that 9*0.111..... can be written as 0.99999999999999......etc which is 1. | >> Tagged as: Select All |
0.999....(recurring) exactly equals 1 by Inchbrook Posts by this user 34 Date: 24/11/2014 Time: 18:49:37 | [Report this Post] | | It's *nearly* the same, but it's not 'exactly the same'. It's like saying 9 is exactly the same as 10, which it patently isn't! | >> Tagged as: Select All |
0.999....(recurring) exactly equals 1 by Anonymous Coward Date: 24/11/2014 Time: 18:57:23 | | | so if you take 0.999.... away from 1, what do you get? | >> Tagged as: Select All |
0.999....(recurring) exactly equals 1 by Anonymous Coward Date: 24/11/2014 Time: 19:02:20 | | | and it's an infinite number of 9s....I should have been more clear in the OP. If 0.999... and 1 are different numbers then one minus the other should give you the difference....and what is that difference? | >> Tagged as: Select All |
0.999....(recurring) exactly equals 1 by Cliff Pilchard Posts by this user 40 Date: 24/11/2014 Time: 22:20:18 | [Report this Post] | | Quotation: 9*0.111..... can be written as 0.99999999999999......etcwhich is 1
No it isn't. 9x0.1111111...inf = 0.999999...inf which is less than 1 the difference is 0.00000...with an infinite number of zeros followed by a 1 - which is impossible because there is no end to the line of zeros as they are infinite. But wherever that line ends that is the 1 that makes the answer smaller than 1. Its the same reason you want your penny change when you spend £19.99 £19.99 isn't £20.00 | >> Tagged as: Select All |
0.999....(recurring) exactly equals 1 by Anonymous Coward Date: 24/11/2014 Time: 23:01:40 | | | so if an infinite number of zeros 'ending' in a 1 is impossible, all you have is an infinite number of zeros surely? | >> Tagged as: Select All |

0.999....(recurring) exactly equals 1 by Cliff Pilchard Posts by this user 40 Date: 25/11/2014 Time: 09:24:58 | [Report this Post] | | |That's correct - bit like the universe - you keep going up and up and where do you end up ? There is no end you just keep going. If there is a big brick wall at the end of your infinite distance journey there is another side to that wall you break through and you just keep on going, on and on - impossible ! (or is it ? ) | >> Tagged as: Select All |
0.999....(recurring) exactly equals 1 by Mud Posts by this user 125 Date: 25/11/2014 Time: 09:33:47 | [Report this Post] | | well, I think the Universe might be a hypersphere, so if you keep going up, you'll end up back where you started. | >> Tagged as: Select All |
